Jób 4
1 Jemuž odpovídaje Elifaz Temanský, řekl:
Then Eliphaz the Thaemanite answered and said,
2 Počneme-li mluviti s tebou, neponeseš-liž toho těžce? Ale kdož by se zdržeti mohl, aby neměl mluviti?
Hast you been often spoken to in distress? but who shall endure the force of your words?
3 Aj, učívals mnohé, a rukou opuštěných jsi posiloval.
For whereas you have instructed many, and have strengthened the hands of the weak one,
4 Padajícího pozdvihovals řečmi svými, a kolena zemdlená jsi zmocňoval.
and have supported the failing with words, and have imparted courage to feeble knees.
5 Nyní pak, jakž toto přišlo na tebe, těžce to neseš, a jakž tě dotklo, předěšen jsi.
Yet now [that] pain has come upon you, and touched you, you are troubled.
6 Nebylo-liž náboženství tvé nadějí tvou, a upřímost cest tvých očekáváním tvým?
Is not your fear [founded] in folly, your hope also, and the mischief of your way?
7 Rozpomeň se, prosím, kdo jest kdy nevinný zahynul? Aneb kde upřímí vyhlazeni jsou?
Remember then who has perished, being pure? or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed?
8 Jakož jsem já vídal ty, kteříž orali nepravost, a rozsívali převrácenost, že ji i žali.
Accordingly as I have seen men plowing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves.
9 Od dchnutí Božího hynou, a duchem prchlivosti jeho v nic obracíni bývají.
They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of his wrath.
10 Řvání lva a hlas lvice a zubové mladých lvíčat setříni bývají.
The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched.
11 Hyne lev, že nemá loupeže, a lvíčata mladá rozptýlena bývají.
The old lion has perished for lack of food, and the lions' whelps have forsaken one another.
12 Nebo i tajně doneslo se mne slovo, a pochopilo ucho mé něco maličko toho.
But if there had been any truth in your words, none of these evils would have befallen you. Shall not mine ear receive excellent [revelations] from him?
13 V přemyšlováních z vidění nočních, když připadá tvrdý sen na lidi,
But [as when] terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night,
14 Strach připadl na mne a lekání, kteréž předěsilo všecky kosti mé.
horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake.
15 Duch zajisté před tváří mou šel, tak že vlasové vstávali na těle mém.
And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered.
16 Zastavil se, ale neznal jsem tváři jeho; tvárnost jen byla před očima mýma. Mezi tím mlče, slyšel jsem hlas:
I arose and perceived it not: I looked, and there, was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, [saying],
17 Zdaliž může člověk spravedlivějším býti než Bůh, aneb muž čistším nad toho, kterýž ho učinil?
What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? or a man be blameless in regard to his works?
18 Ano mezi služebníky jeho není dokonalosti, a při andělích svých zanechal nedostatku.
Whereas he trust not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels.
19 Čím více při těch, kteříž bydlejí v domích hliněných, jejichž základ jest na prachu, a setříni bývají snáze než mol.
But [as for] them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, he smites them like a moth.
20 Od jitra až do večera stíráni bývají, a kdož toho nerozvažují, na věky zahynou.
And from the morning to evening they no longer exist: they have perished, because they can’t help themselves.
21 Zdaliž nepomíjí sláva jejich s nimi? Umírají, ale ne v moudrosti.
For he blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom.
