1 To nathuem ah Ammon siangpahrang Nahash loe duek moe, a capa mah anih zuengah uk.
And it happened after this, that Nahash the king of the people of Ammon died, and his son Hanun reigned in his place.
2 David mah, Anih ih ampa mah kai ang tahmen pongah, Nahash capa Hanun nuiah tahmenhaih kam tuengsak han, tiah a poek. Ampa kawng pongah palungsethaih amtuengsak hanah David mah Hanun khaeah laicaeh patoeh. David ih kaminawk loe, Hanun khaeah palungsethaih lokthuih hanah Ammon prae ah angzoh o.
David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. David's servants came into the land of the people of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
3 Toe Ammon angraengnawk mah Hanun khaeah, David mah nam pa nuiah palungsethaih amtuengsak han ih ni, pathloep kaminawk to patoeh, tiah na poek maw? Anih ih tamnanawk loe prae to khet moe, paro han hoi misatuk han ih na ai maw angzoh o? tiah a naa o.
But the leaders of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, "Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Haven't his servants come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?"
4 Hanun mah David ih kaminawk to naeh moe, sam to aah pae; khukbuen to laetabu khoek to aah pae pat moe, amlaemsak let.
So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 To pacoengah kangcoeng hmuen kawng to kami maeto mah David khaeah thuih pae. Nihcae to paroeai azat thokah sak o pongah, nihcae tongh hanah anih mah kami to patoeh. Siangpahrang mah, Na toektaboe mui tacawt ai karoek to, Jeriko vangpui ah na oh o pacoengah, amlaem oh, tiah thuih, tiah a naa.
Then there went certain persons, and told David how the men were served. He sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, "Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return."
6 David hanah hmuisae hmuen a sak pae o boeh, tiah Ammon kaminawk mah panoek o naah, Hanun hoi Ammon kaminawk mah Mesopotamia prae, Syria-Maakah hoi Zobah prae hoiah hrangleeng, hrang angthueng kaminawk to tlai hanah, phoisa talent sangto a pat pae.
When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the people of Ammon sent one thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Aram Maacah, and out of Zobah.
7 Nihcae mah hrangleeng sing thum, sang hnetto, Maakah siangpahrang hoi anih ih misatuh kaminawk to tlai pongah, nihcae loe angzoh o moe, Medeba taengah atai o. Ammon kaminawk loe avang maeto pacoeng maeto ah amkhueng o moe, misatuk hanah caeh o.
So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah and his people, who came and camped before Medeba. The people of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
8 David mah to tamthang to thaih naah, Joab hoi thacak angmah ih misatuh kaminawk to patoeh boih.
When David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men.
9 Ammon kaminawk loe angzoh o moe, angmacae ih vangpui sipae khongkha ah misatuk hanah amkhueng o; angmacae koeh ah angzo siangpahrangnawk loe taw thungah oh o.
The people of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the gate of the city: and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
10 Joab mah anih tuk hanah ahnuk ahmaa kaom kaminawk to hnuk naah, Israel thung hoi kahoih koek misatuh kaminawk to a qoih moe, Syria kaminawk to tuksak.
Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Arameans.
11 Kalah misatuh kaminawk loe amnawk Abishai hanah uksak, nihcae loe Ammon kaminawk tuk hanah amsak o.
The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and they put themselves in array against the people of Ammon.
12 Joab mah, Syria kaminawk thacak o hmoek nahaeloe, kai hae na bom ah, nang hanah Ammon kaminawk thacak o hmoek nahaeloe, kai mah kang bomh han, tiah a naa.
He said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.
13 Misahoih ohsak loe, aimacae kaminawk hoi aimacae ih Sithaw hanah, misahoihaih hoiah tuh si; Angraeng mah a mikhnukah kahoih hmuen to sah nasoe, tiah a naa.
Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do that which seems good to him."
14 Joab hoi a taengah kaom kaminawk loe Syria misatuk hanah caeh o boih; Syria kaminawk loe nihcae hmaa ah cawnh o.
So Joab and the people who were with him drew near before the Arameans to the battle; and they fled before him.
15 Syria kaminawk cawnh o boeh, tiah Ammon kaminawk mah hnuk o naah, nihcae doeh amnawk Abishai hmaa ah cawnh o toeng moe, vangpui thungah akun o. To pacoengah Joab loe Jerusalem ah amlaem let.
When the people of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
16 Israel kaminawk hmaa ah misa sung boeh, tiah Syria kaminawk mah panoek o naah, nihcae mah laicaehnawk to patoeh o moe, vapui yaeh ah kaom Syria misatuh kaminawk to kawksak; Hadarezer ih misatuh angraeng Shophak mah nihcae to caeh haih.
When the Arameans saw that they were defeated by Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Arameans who were beyond the River, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.
17 To lok to David khaeah thuih pae o naah, anih mah Israel kaminawk boih to pakhueng moe, Jordan vapui to angkat o; nihcae khaeah phak o moe, nihcae tuk hanah amsak o. David loe Syria kaminawk tuk hanah amsak moe, nihcae hoi misa angtuk o.
It was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came on them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Arameans, they fought with him.
18 Toe Syria kaminawk loe Israel kaminawk hmaa ah cawnh o; David mah hrangleeng nuiah angthueng kami sang sarihto hum moe, khok hoi misatuh kami sing palito a hum; nihcae ih misatuh angraeng Shophak doeh a hum pae.
The Arameans fled before Israel; and David killed of the Arameans the men of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shobach the captain of the army.
19 Israel kaminawk mah pazawk boeh, tiah Hadarezer taengah kaom tamnanawk mah panoek o naah, David hoi angdaehhaih sak o moe, anih ih tamna ah oh o. To pongah Syria kaminawk mah Ammon kaminawk abomh han koeh o ai boeh.
When the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David, and served him: neither would the Arameans help the people of Ammon any more.
