أَمْثَالٌ 26

١ 1 كَٱلثَّلْجِ فِي ٱلصَّيْفِ وَكَالْمَطَرِ فِي ٱلْحَصَادِ، هَكَذَا ٱلْكَرَامَةُ غَيْرُ لَائِقَةٍ بِٱلْجَاهِلِ.

As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so, unbecoming to a dullard is honour.

٢ 2 كَٱلْعُصْفُورِ لِلْفَرَارِ وَكَالسُّنُونَةِ لِلطَّيَرَانِ، كَذَلِكَ لَعْنَةٌ بِلَا سَبَبٍ لَا تَأْتِي.

As a sparrow in wandering, as a swallow in flying, so, a causeless curse, shall not alight.

٣ 3 اَلسَّوْطُ لِلْفَرَسِ وَٱللِّجَامُ لِلْحِمَارِ، وَٱلْعَصَا لِظَهْرِ ٱلْجُهَّالِ.

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the back of dullards.

٤ 4 لَا تُجَاوِبِ ٱلْجَاهِلَ حَسَبَ حَمَاقَتِهِ لِئَلَّا تَعْدِلَهُ أَنْتَ.

Do not answer a dullard, according to his folly, lest, even thou thyself, become like him;

٥ 5 جَاوِبِ ٱلْجَاهِلَ حَسَبَ حَمَاقَتِهِ لِئَلَّا يَكُونَ حَكِيمًا فِي عَيْنَيْ نَفْسِهِ.

Answer a dullard according to his folly, lest he become wise in his own eyes.

٦ 6 يَقْطَعُ ٱلرِّجْلَيْنِ، يَشْرَبُ ظُلْمًا، مَنْ يُرْسِلُ كَلَامًا عَنْ يَدِ جَاهِلٍ.

One who cutteth off feet, one who drinketh down wrong, is he who sendeth a message by the hand of a dullard.

٧ 7 سَاقَا ٱلْأَعْرَجِ مُتَدَلْدِلَتَانِ، وَكَذَا ٱلْمَثَلُ فِي فَمِ ٱلْجُهَّالِ.

Useless are the legs of the lame, and a proverb, in the mouth of a dullard.

٨ 8 كَصُرَّةِ حِجَارَةٍ كَرِيمَةٍ فِي رُجْمَةٍ، هَكَذَا ٱلْمُعْطِي كَرَامَةً لِلْجَاهِلِ.

Like tying a stone to a sling, so, is he that giveth honour, to a dullard.

٩ 9 شَوْكٌ مُرْتَفِعٌ بِيَدِ سَكْرَانٍ، مِثْلُ ٱلْمَثَلِ فِي فَمِ ٱلْجُهَّالِ.

A brier cometh into the hand of a drunken-man, a proverb into the mouth of dullards.

١٠ 10 رَامٍ يَطْعَنُ ٱلْكُلَّ، هَكَذَا مَنْ يَسْتَأْجِرُ ٱلْجَاهِلَ أَوْ يَسْتَأْجِرُ ٱلْمُحْتَالِينَ.

[As] an archer who woundeth every thing, [so] one who hireth a dullard, and a drunkard crossing the sea.

١١ 11 كَمَا يَعُودُ ٱلْكَلْبُ إِلَى قَيْئِهِ، هَكَذَا ٱلْجَاهِلُ يُعِيدُ حَمَاقَتَهُ.

As, a dog, returneth onto his own vomit, a dullard, repeateth his folly.

١٢ 12 أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا حَكِيمًا فِي عَيْنَيْ نَفْسِهِ؟ ٱلرَّجَاءُ بِٱلْجَاهِلِ أَكْثَرُ مِنَ ٱلرَّجَاءِ بِهِ.

Thou hast seen a man wise in his own eye, —more hope of a dullard, than of him!

١٣ 13 قَالَ ٱلْكَسْلَانُ: «ٱلْأَسَدُ فِي ٱلطَّرِيقِ، ٱلشِّبْلُ فِي ٱلشَّوَارِعِ!».

Saith the sluggard, A roaring lion in the road! A tearing lion in the midst of the broadways.

١٤ 14 اَلْبَابُ يَدُورُ عَلَى صَائِرِهِ، وَٱلْكَسْلَانُ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ.

The door, turneth on its hinges, and, the sluggard, upon his bed.

١٥ 15 اَلْكَسْلَانُ يُخْفِي يَدَهُ فِي ٱلصَّحْفَةِ، وَيَشُقُّ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَرُدَّهَا إِلَى فَمِهِ.

The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.

١٦ 16 اَلْكَسْلَانُ أَوْفَرُ حِكْمَةً فِي عَيْنَيْ نَفْسِهِ مِنَ ٱلسَّبْعَةِ ٱلْمُجِيبِينَ بِعَقْلٍ.

Wiser is the sluggard in his own eyes, than, seven persons, who can answer with judgment.

١٧ 17 كَمُمْسِكٍ أُذُنَيْ كَلْبٍ، هَكَذَا مَنْ يَعْبُرُ وَيَتَعَرَّضُ لِمُشَاجَرَةٍ لَا تَعْنِيهِ.

As he who layeth hold of the ears of a dog, is a passer-by, who giveth vent to his wrath over a quarrel, not his!

١٨ 18 مِثْلُ ٱلْمَجْنُونِ ٱلَّذِي يَرْمِي نَارًا وَسِهَامًا وَمَوْتًا،

As a madman throwing firebrands, arrows and death,

١٩ 19 هَكَذَا ٱلرَّجُلُ ٱلْخَادِعُ قَرِيبَهُ وَيَقُولُ: «أَلَمْ أَلْعَبْ أَنَا!».

So, is a man who deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Was not, I, in sport?

٢٠ 20 بِعَدَمِ ٱلْحَطَبِ تَنْطَفِئُ ٱلنَّارُ، وَحَيْثُ لَا نَمَّامَ يَهْدَأُ ٱلْخِصَامُ.

Without wood a fire is quenched, and, where there is no tattler, strife is hushed.

٢١ 21 فَحْمٌ لِلْجَمْرِ وَحَطَبٌ لِلنَّارِ، هَكَذَا ٱلرَّجُلُ ٱلْمُخَاصِمُ لِتَهْيِيجِ ٱلنِّزَاعِ.

Black coal to burning blocks, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man, for kindling strife.

٢٢ 22 كَلَامُ ٱلنَّمَّامِ مِثْلُ لُقَمٍ حُلْوَةٍ فَيَنْزِلُ إِلَى مَخَادِعِ ٱلْبَطْنِ.

the words of a tattler, are dainties, they, therefore go down into the chambers of the inner man.

٢٣ 23 فِضَّةُ زَغَلٍ تُغَشِّي شَقْفَةً، هَكَذَا ٱلشَّفَتَانِ ٱلْمُتَوَقِّدَتَانِ وَٱلْقَلْبُ ٱلشِّرِّيرُ.

Dross silver overlaid upon earthenware, so are burning lips, with a mischievous heart:

٢٤ 24 بِشَفَتَيْهِ يَتَنَكَّرُ ٱلْمُبْغِضُ، وَفِي جَوْفِهِ يَضَعُ غِشًّا.

With his lips, the hater dissembleth, but, within himself, he layeth up deceit:

٢٥ 25 إِذَا حَسَّنَ صَوْتَهُ فَلَا تَأْتَمِنْهُ، لِأَنَّ فِي قَلْبِهِ سَبْعَ رَجَاسَاتٍ.

Though he make gracious his voice, do not trust him, for, seven abominations, are in his heart:

٢٦ 26 مَنْ يُغَطِّي بُغْضَةً بِمَكْرٍ، يَكْشِفُ خُبْثَهُ بَيْنَ ٱلْجَمَاعَةِ.

Hatred may clothe itself with guile, his wickedness shall be disclosed in the convocation.

٢٧ 27 مَنْ يَحْفِرُ حُفْرَةً يَسْقُطُ فِيهَا، وَمَنْ يُدَحْرِجُ حَجَرًا يَرْجِعُ عَلَيْهِ.

He that diggeth a pit, thereinto, shall fall, and, he that rolleth a stone, upon himself, shall it return.

٢٨ 28 اَللِّسَانُ ٱلْكَاذِبُ يُبْغِضُ مُنْسَحِقِيهِ، وَٱلْفَمُ ٱلْمَلِقُ يُعِدُّ خَرَابًا.

A false tongue, hateth them who are crushed by it, and, a flattering mouth, worketh occasion of stumbling.
