أَمْثَالٌ 20

١ 1 اَلْخَمْرُ مُسْتَهْزِئَةٌ. ٱلْمُسْكِرُ عَجَّاجٌ، وَمَنْ يَتَرَنَّحُ بِهِمَا فَلَيْسَ بِحَكِيمٍ.

Wine is an intemperate thing, and strong drink full of violence: but every fool is entangled with them.

٢ 2 رُعْبُ ٱلْمَلِكِ كَزَمْجَرَةِ ٱلْأَسَدِ. ٱلَّذِي يُغِيظُهُ يُخْطِئُ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ.

The threat of a king differs not from the rage of a lion; and he that provokes him sins against his own soul.

٣ 3 مَجْدُ ٱلرَّجُلِ أَنْ يَبْتَعِدَ عَنِ ٱلْخِصَامِ، وَكُلُّ أَحْمَقَ يُنَازِعُ.

[It is] a glory to a man to turn aside from railing; but every fool is entangled with such matters.

٤ 4 اَلْكَسْلَانُ لَا يَحْرُثُ بِسَبَبِ ٱلشِّتَاءِ، فَيَسْتَعْطِي فِي ٱلْحَصَادِ وَلَا يُعْطَى.

A sluggard when reproached is not ashamed: so also he who borrows corn in harvest.

٥ 5 اَلْمَشُورَةُ فِي قَلْبِ ٱلرَّجُلِ مِيَاهٌ عَمِيقَةٌ، وَذُو ٱلْفِطْنَةِ يَسْتَقِيهَا.

Counsel in a man's heart is deep water; but a prudent man will draw it out.

٦ 6 أَكْثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ يُنَادُونَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ بِصَلَاحِهِ، أَمَّا ٱلرَّجُلُ ٱلْأَمِينُ فَمَنْ يَجِدُهُ؟

A man is valuable, and a merciful man precious: but [it is] hard to find a faithful man.

٧ 7 اَلصِّدِّيقُ يَسْلُكُ بِكَمَالِهِ. طُوبَى لِبَنِيهِ بَعْدَهُ.

He that walks blameless in justice, shall leave his children blessed.

٨ 8 اَلْمَلِكُ ٱلْجَالِسُ عَلَى كُرْسِيِّ ٱلْقَضَاءِ يُذَرِّي بِعَيْنِهِ كُلَّ شَرٍّ.

Whenever a righteous king sits on the throne, no evil thing can stand before his presence.

٩ 9 مَنْ يَقُولُ: «إِنِّي زَكَّيْتُ قَلْبِي، تَطَهَّرْتُ مِنْ خَطِيَّتِي»؟

Who will boast that he has a pure heart? or who will boldly say that he is pure from sins?

١٠ 10 مِعْيَارٌ فَمِعْيَارٌ، مِكْيَالٌ فَمِكْيَالٌ، كِلَاهُمَا مَكْرَهَةٌ عِنْدَ ٱلرَّبِّ.

A large and small weight, and various measures, are even both of them unclean before the Lord; and [so is] he that makes them.

١١ 11 اَلْوَلَدُ أَيْضًا يُعْرَفُ بِأَفْعَالِهِ، هَلْ عَمَلُهُ نَقِيٌّ وَمُسْتَقِيمٌ؟

A youth [when in company] with a godly man, will be restrained in his devices, and [then] his way will be straight.

١٢ 12 اَلْأُذُنُ ٱلسَّامِعَةُ وَٱلْعَيْنُ ٱلْبَاصِرَةُ، ٱلرَّبُّ صَنَعَهُمَا كِلْتَيْهِمَا.

The ear hears, and the eye sees: even both of them are the Lord's work.

١٣ 13 لَا تُحِبَّ ٱلنَّوْمَ لِئَلَّا تَفْتَقِرَ. ٱفْتَحْ عَيْنَيْكَ تَشْبَعْ خُبْزًا.

Love not to speak ill, lest you be cut off: open your eyes, and be filled with bread.

١٤ 14 «رَدِيءٌ، رَدِيءٌ!» يَقُولُ ٱلْمُشْتَرِي، وَإِذَا ذَهَبَ فَحِينَئِذٍ يَفْتَخِرُ!

١٥ 15 يُوجَدُ ذَهَبٌ وَكَثْرَةُ لَآلِئَ، أَمَّا شِفَاهُ ٱلْمَعْرِفَةِ فَمَتَاعٌ ثَمِينٌ.

١٦ 16 خُذْ ثَوْبَهُ لِأَنَّهُ ضَمِنَ غَرِيبًا، وَلِأَجْلِ ٱلْأَجَانِبِ ٱرْتَهِنْ مِنْهُ.

١٧ 17 خُبْزُ ٱلْكَذِبِ لَذِيذٌ لِلْإِنْسَانِ، وَمِنْ بَعْدُ يَمْتَلِئُ فَمُهُ حَصًى.

١٨ 18 اَلْمَقَاصِدُ تُثَبَّتُ بِٱلْمَشُورَةِ، وَبِالتَّدَابِيرِ ٱعْمَلْ حَرْبًا.

١٩ 19 اَلسَّاعِي بِٱلْوِشَايَةِ يُفْشِي ٱلسِّرَّ، فَلَا تُخَالِطِ ٱلْمُفَتِّحَ شَفَتَيْهِ.

٢٠ 20 مَنْ سَبَّ أَبَاهُ أَوْ أُمَّهُ يَنْطَفِئُ سِرَاجُهُ فِي حَدَقَةِ ٱلظَّلَامِ.

The lamp of him that reviles father or mother shall be put out, and his eyeballs shall see darkness.

٢١ 21 رُبَّ مُلْكٍ مُعَجِّلٍ فِي أَوَّلِهِ، أَمَّا آخِرَتُهُ فَلَا تُبَارَكُ.

A portion hastily gotten at first shall not be blessed in the end.

٢٢ 22 لَا تَقُلْ: «إِنِّي أُجَازِي شَرًّا». ٱنْتَظِرِ ٱلرَّبَّ فَيُخَلِّصَكَ.

Say not, I will avenge myself on my enemy; but wait on the Lord, that he may help you.

٢٣ 23 مِعْيَارٌ فَمِعْيَارٌ مَكْرَهَةُ ٱلرَّبِّ، وَمَوَازِينُ ٱلْغِشِّ غَيْرُ صَالِحَةٍ.

A double weight is an abomination to the Lord; and a deceitful balance is not good in his sight.

٢٤ 24 مِنَ ٱلرَّبِّ خَطَوَاتُ ٱلرَّجُلِ، أَمَّا ٱلْإِنْسَانُ فَكَيْفَ يَفْهَمُ طَرِيقَهُ؟

A man's goings are directed of the Lord: how then can a mortal understand his ways?

٢٥ 25 هُوَ شَرَكٌ لِلْإِنْسَانِ أَنْ يَلْغُوَ قَائِلًا: «مُقَدَّسٌ»، وَبَعْدَ ٱلنَّذْرِ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ!

It is a snare to a man hastily to consecrate some of his own property: for [in that case] repentance comes after vowing.

٢٦ 26 اَلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ يُشَتِّتُ ٱلْأَشْرَارَ، وَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمِ ٱلنَّوْرَجَ.

A wise king utterly crushes the ungodly, and will bring a wheel upon them.

٢٧ 27 نَفْسُ ٱلْإِنْسَانِ سِرَاجُ ٱلرَّبِّ، يُفَتِّشُ كُلَّ مَخَادِعِ ٱلْبَطْنِ.

The spirit of man is a light of the Lord, who searches the inmost parts of the belly.

٢٨ 28 ٱلرَّحْمَةُ وَٱلْحَقُّ يَحْفَظَانِ ٱلْمَلِكَ، وَكُرْسِيُّهُ يُسْنَدُ بِٱلرَّحْمَةِ.

Mercy and truth are a guard to a king, and will surround his throne with righteousness.

٢٩ 29 فَخْرُ ٱلشُّبَّانِ قُوَّتُهُمْ، وَبَهَاءُ ٱلشُّيُوخِ ٱلشَّيْبُ.

Wisdom is an ornament to young men; and grey [hairs] are the glory of old men.

٣٠ 30 حُبُرُ جُرْحٍ مُنَقِّيَةٌ لِلشِّرِّيرِ، وَضَرَبَاتٌ بَالِغَةٌ مَخَادِعَ ٱلْبَطْنِ.

Bruises and contusions befall bad men; and plagues [shall come] in the inward parts of [their] belly.
