اَلتَّثْنِيَة 1

١ 1 هَذَا هُوَ ٱلْكَلَامُ ٱلَّذِي كَلَّمَ بِهِ مُوسَى جَمِيعَ إِسْرَائِيلَ فِي عَبْرِ ٱلْأُرْدُنِّ، فِي ٱلْبَرِّيَّةِ فِي ٱلْعَرَبَةِ، قُبَالَةَ سُوفَ، بَيْنَ فَارَانَ وَتُوفَلَ وَلَابَانَ وَحَضَيْرُوتَ وَذِي ذَهَبٍ.

These are the words which Moses [Drawn out] spoke to all Israel [God prevails] beyond the Jordan [Descender] in the wilderness, in the Arabah over against Suf, between Paran, Tophel, Laban [White], Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

٢ 2 أَحَدَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا مِنْ حُورِيبَ عَلَى طَرِيقِ جَبَلِ سِعِيرَ إِلَى قَادَشَ بَرْنِيعَ.

It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb [Desert] by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea [Consecrated Son-inconstant].

٣ 3 فَفِي ٱلسَّنَةِ ٱلْأَرْبَعِينَ، فِي ٱلشَّهْرِ ٱلْحَادِي عَشَرَ فِي ٱلْأَوَّلِ مِنَ ٱلشَّهْرِ، كَلَّمَ مُوسَى بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ حَسَبَ كُلِّ مَا أَوْصَاهُ ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَيْهِمْ.

In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses [Drawn out] spoke to the children of Israel [God prevails], according to all that Adonai had given Moses [Drawn out], words of enjoinings to them;

٤ 4 بَعْدَ مَا ضَرَبَ سِيحُونَ مَلِكَ ٱلْأَمُورِيِّينَ ٱلسَّاكِنَ فِي حَشْبُونَ، وَعُوجَ مَلِكَ بَاشَانَ ٱلسَّاكِنَ فِي عَشْتَارُوثَ فِي إِذْرَعِي.

after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.

٥ 5 فِي عَبْرِ ٱلْأُرْدُنِّ، فِي أَرْضِ مُوآبَ، ٱبْتَدَأَ مُوسَى يَشْرَحُ هَذِهِ ٱلشَّرِيعَةَ قَائِلًا:

Beyond the Jordan [Descender], in the land of Moab [From father], Moses [Drawn out] began to declare this Torah ·Teaching·, saying,

٦ 6 «اَلرَّبُّ إِلَهُنَا كَلَّمَنَا فِي حُورِيبَ قَائِلًا: كَفَاكُمْ قُعُودٌ فِي هَذَا ٱلْجَبَلِ،

“Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] spoke to us in Horeb [Desert], saying, ‘You have lived long enough at this mountain.

٧ 7 تَحَوَّلُوا وَٱرْتَحِلُوا وَٱدْخُلُوا جَبَلَ ٱلْأَمُورِيِّينَ وَكُلَّ مَا يَلِيهِ مِنَ ٱلْعَرَبَةِ وَٱلْجَبَلِ وَٱلسَّهْلِ وَٱلْجَنُوبِ وَسَاحِلِ ٱلْبَحْرِ، أَرْضَ ٱلْكَنْعَانِيِّ وَلُبْنَانَ إِلَى ٱلنَّهْرِ ٱلْكَبِيرِ، نَهْرِ ٱلْفُرَاتِ.

Turn, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], and to all the places near there, in the Arabah, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the seashore, the land of the Canaanites [Descendants of Humbled], and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates [Fruitful].

٨ 8 اُنْظُرْ. قَدْ جَعَلْتُ أَمَامَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ. ٱدْخُلُوا وَتَمَلَّكُوا ٱلْأَرْضَ ٱلَّتِي أَقْسَمَ ٱلرَّبُّ لِآبَائِكُمْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ أَنْ يُعْطِيَهَا لَهُمْ وَلِنَسْلِهِمْ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ.

Behold, I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which Adonai swore to your fathers, to Abraham [Father of a multitude], to Isaac [Laughter], and to Jacob [Supplanter], to give to them and to their offspring after them.’”

٩ 9 «وَكَلَّمْتُكُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ ٱلْوَقْتِ قَائِلًا: لَا أَقْدِرُ وَحْدِي أَنْ أَحْمِلَكُمْ.

I spoke to you at that time, saying, “I am not able to bear you myself alone.

١٠ 10 اَلرَّبُّ إِلَهُكُمْ قَدْ كَثَّرَكُمْ. وَهُوَذَا أَنْتُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ كَنُجُومِ ٱلسَّمَاءِ فِي ٱلْكَثْرَةِ.

Adonai your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as the stars of the sky for multitude.

١١ 11 ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُ آبَائِكُمْ يَزِيدُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِثْلَكُمْ أَلْفَ مَرَّةٍ، وَيُبَارِكُكُمْ كَمَا كَلَّمَكُمْ.

Adonai, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you, as he has promised you!

١٢ 12 كَيْفَ أَحْمِلُ وَحْدِي ثِقْلَكُمْ وَحِمْلَكُمْ وَخُصُومَتَكُمْ؟

How can I myself alone bear your problems, your burdens, and your strife?

١٣ 13 هَاتُوا مِنْ أَسْبَاطِكُمْ رِجَالًا حُكَمَاءَ وَعُقَلَاءَ وَمَعْرُوفِينَ، فَأَجْعَلُهُمْ رُؤُوسَكُمْ.

Take wise men of understanding and well known according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.”

١٤ 14 فَأَجَبْتُمُونِي وَقُلْتُمْ: حَسَنٌ ٱلْأَمْرُ ٱلَّذِي تَكَلَّمْتَ بِهِ أَنْ يُعْمَلَ.

You answered me, and said, “The thing which you have spoken is good to do.”

١٥ 15 فَأَخَذْتُ رُؤُوسَ أَسْبَاطِكُمْ رِجَالًا حُكَمَاءَ وَمَعْرُوفِينَ، وَجَعَلْتُهُمْ رُؤُوسًا عَلَيْكُمْ، رُؤَسَاءَ أُلُوفٍ، وَرُؤَسَاءَ مِئَاتٍ، وَرُؤَسَاءَ خَمَاسِينَ، وَرُؤَسَاءَ عَشَرَاتٍ، وَعُرَفَاءَ لِأَسْبَاطِكُمْ.

So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.

١٦ 16 وَأَمَرْتُ قُضَاتَكُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ ٱلْوَقْتِ قَائِلًا: ٱسْمَعُوا بَيْنَ إِخْوَتِكُمْ وَٱقْضُوا بِٱلْحَقِّ بَيْنَ ٱلْإِنْسَانِ وَأَخِيهِ وَنَزِيلِهِ.

I enjoined your judges at that time, saying, “Sh'ma ·Hear obey· cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.

١٧ 17 لَا تَنْظُرُوا إِلَى ٱلْوُجُوهِ فِي ٱلْقَضَاءِ. لِلصَّغِيرِ كَٱلْكَبِيرِ تَسْمَعُونَ. لَا تَهَابُوا وَجْهَ إِنْسَانٍ لِأَنَّ ٱلْقَضَاءَ لِلهِ. وَٱلْأَمْرُ ٱلَّذِي يَعْسُرُ عَلَيْكُمْ تُقَدِّمُونَهُ إِلَيَّ لِأَسْمَعَهُ.

You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall sh'ma ·hear obey· the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will sh'ma ·hear obey· it.”

١٨ 18 وَأَمَرْتُكُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ ٱلْوَقْتِ بِكُلِّ ٱلْأُمُورِ ٱلَّتِي تَعْمَلُونَهَا.

I enjoined you at that time all the things which you should do.

١٩ 19 «ثُمَّ ٱرْتَحَلْنَا مِنْ حُورِيبَ، وَسَلَكْنَا كُلَّ ذَلِكَ ٱلْقَفْرِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ٱلْمَخُوفِ ٱلَّذِي رَأَيْتُمْ فِي طَرِيقِ جَبَلِ ٱلْأَمُورِيِّينَ، كَمَا أَمَرَنَا ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُنَا. وَجِئْنَا إِلَى قَادَشَ بَرْنِيعَ.

We traveled from Horeb [Desert], and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], as Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] enjoined us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea [Consecrated Son-inconstant].

٢٠ 20 فَقُلْتُ لَكُمْ: قَدْ جِئْتُمْ إِلَى جَبَلِ ٱلْأَمُورِيِّينَ ٱلَّذِي أَعْطَانَا ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُنَا.

I said to you, “You have come to the hill country of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], which Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] gives to us.

٢١ 21 اُنْظُرْ. قَدْ جَعَلَ ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُكَ ٱلْأَرْضَ أَمَامَكَ. ٱصْعَدْ تَمَلَّكْ كَمَا كَلَّمَكَ ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُ آبَائِكَ. لَا تَخَفْ وَلَا تَرْتَعِبْ.

Behold, Adonai your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as Adonai, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”

٢٢ 22 فَتَقَدَّمْتُمْ إِلَيَّ جَمِيعُكُمْ وَقُلْتُمْ: دَعْنَا نُرْسِلْ رِجَالًا قُدَّامَنَا لِيَتَجَسَّسُوا لَنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ، وَيَرُدُّوا إِلَيْنَا خَبَرًا عَنِ ٱلطَّرِيقِ ٱلَّتِي نَصْعَدُ فِيهَا وَٱلْمُدُنِ ٱلَّتِي نَأْتِي إِلَيْهَا.

You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.”

٢٣ 23 فَحَسُنَ ٱلْكَلَامُ لَدَيَّ، فَأَخَذْتُ مِنْكُمُ ٱثْنَيْ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا. رَجُلًا وَاحِدًا مِنْ كُلِّ سِبْطٍ.

The thing pleased me well. I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe.

٢٤ 24 فَٱنْصَرَفُوا وَصَعِدُوا إِلَى ٱلْجَبَلِ وَأَتَوْا إِلَى وَادِي أَشْكُولَ وَتَجَسَّسُوهُ،

They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.

٢٥ 25 وَأَخَذُوا فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ مِنْ أَثْمَارِ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَنَزَلُوا بِهِ إِلَيْنَا، وَرَدُّوا لَنَا خَبَرًا وَقَالُوا: جَيِّدَةٌ هِيَ ٱلْأَرْضُ ٱلَّتِي أَعْطَانَا ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُنَا.

They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, “It is a good land which Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] gives to us.”

٢٦ 26 «لَكِنَّكُمْ لَمْ تَشَاءُوا أَنْ تَصْعَدُوا، وَعَصَيْتُمْ قَوْلَ ٱلرَّبِّ إِلَهِكُمْ،

Yet you wouldn’t go up, but rebelled against the order of Adonai your God.

٢٧ 27 وَتَمَرْمَرْتُمْ فِي خِيَامِكُمْ وَقُلْتُمُ: ٱلرَّبُّ بِسَبَبِ بُغْضَتِهِ لَنَا، قَدْ أَخْرَجَنَا مِنْ أَرْضِ مِصْرَ لِيَدْفَعَنَا إِلَى أَيْدِي ٱلْأَمُورِيِّينَ لِكَيْ يُهْلِكَنَا.

You murmured in your tents, and said, “Because Adonai hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt [Abode of slavery], to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], to destroy us.

٢٨ 28 إِلَى أَيْنَ نَحْنُ صَاعِدُونَ؟ قَدْ أَذَابَ إِخْوَتُنَا قُلُوبَنَا قَائِلِينَ: شَعْبٌ أَعْظَمُ وَأَطْوَلُ مِنَّا. مُدُنٌ عَظِيمَةٌ مُحَصَّنَةٌ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَاءِ، وَأَيْضًا قَدْ رَأَيْنَا بَنِي عَنَاقَ هُنَاكَ.

Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”

٢٩ 29 فَقُلْتُ لَكُمْ: لَا تَرْهَبُوا وَلَا تَخَافُوا مِنْهُمُ.

Then I said to you, “Don’t dread, neither be afraid of them.

٣٠ 30 ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُكُمُ ٱلسَّائِرُ أَمَامَكُمْ هُوَ يُحَارِبُ عَنْكُمْ حَسَبَ كُلِّ مَا فَعَلَ مَعَكُمْ فِي مِصْرَ أَمَامَ أَعْيُنِكُمْ

Adonai your God who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt [Abode of slavery] before your eyes,

٣١ 31 وَفِي ٱلْبَرِّيَّةِ، حَيْثُ رَأَيْتَ كَيْفَ حَمَلَكَ ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُكَ كَمَا يَحْمِلُ ٱلْإِنْسَانُ ٱبْنَهُ فِي كُلِّ ٱلطَّرِيقِ ٱلَّتِي سَلَكْتُمُوهَا حَتَّى جِئْتُمْ إِلَى هَذَا ٱلْمَكَانِ.

and in the wilderness, where you have seen how that Adonai your God bore you, as a man does bear his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”

٣٢ 32 وَلَكِنْ فِي هَذَا ٱلْأَمْرِ لَسْتُمْ وَاثِقِينَ بِٱلرَّبِّ إِلَهِكُمُ

Yet in this thing you didn’t believe Adonai your God,

٣٣ 33 ٱلسَّائِرِ أَمَامَكُمْ فِي ٱلطَّرِيقِ، لِيَلْتَمِسَ لَكُمْ مَكَانًا لِنُزُولِكُمْ، فِي نَارٍ لَيْلًا لِيُرِيَكُمُ ٱلطَّرِيقَ ٱلَّتِي تَسِيرُونَ فِيهَا، وَفِي سَحَابٍ نَهَارًا.

who went before you on the way, to seek out a place for you to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.

٣٤ 34 وَسَمِعَ ٱلرَّبُّ صَوْتَ كَلَامِكُمْ فَسَخِطَ وَأَقْسَمَ قَائِلًا:

Adonai sh'ma ·heard obeyed· the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying,

٣٥ 35 لَنْ يَرَى إِنْسَانٌ مِنْ هَؤُلَاءِ ٱلنَّاسِ، مِنْ هَذَا ٱلْجِيلِ ٱلشِّرِّيرِ، ٱلْأَرْضَ ٱلْجَيِّدَةَ ٱلَّتِي أَقْسَمْتُ أَنْ أُعْطِيَهَا لِآبَائِكُمْ،

“Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land, which I swore to give to your fathers,

٣٦ 36 مَا عَدَا كَالِبَ بْنَ يَفُنَّةَ. هُوَ يَرَاهَا، وَلَهُ أُعْطِي ٱلْأَرْضَ ٱلَّتِي وَطِئَهَا، وَلِبَنِيهِ، لِأَنَّهُ قَدِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلرَّبَّ تَمَامًا.

except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it. I will give the land that he has trodden on to him, and to his children, because he has wholly followed Adonai.”

٣٧ 37 وَعَلَيَّ أَيْضًا غَضِبَ ٱلرَّبُّ بِسَبَبِكُمْ قَائِلًا: وَأَنْتَ أَيْضًا لَا تَدْخُلُ إِلَى هُنَاكَ.

Also Adonai was angry with me for your sakes, saying, “You also shall not go in there.

٣٨ 38 يَشُوعُ بْنُ نُونَ ٱلْوَاقِفُ أَمَامَكَ هُوَ يَدْخُلُ إِلَى هُنَاكَ. شَدِّدْهُ لِأَنَّهُ هُوَ يَقْسِمُهَا لِإِسْرَائِيلَ.

Joshua [Salvation Yah] the son of Nun, who stands before you, shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel [God prevails] to inherit it.

٣٩ 39 وَأَمَّا أَطْفَالُكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ قُلْتُمْ يَكُونُونَ غَنِيمَةً، وَبَنُوكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يَعْرِفُوا ٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْخَيْرَ وَٱلشَّرَّ فَهُمْ يَدْخُلُونَ إِلَى هُنَاكَ، وَلَهُمْ أُعْطِيهَا وَهُمْ يَمْلِكُونَهَا.

Moreover your little ones, whom you said should be captured or killed, and your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there, and I will give it to, and they shall possess it.

٤٠ 40 وَأَمَّا أَنْتُمْ فَتَحَوَّلُوا وَٱرْتَحِلُوا إِلَى ٱلْبَرِّيَّةِ عَلَى طَرِيقِ بَحْرِ سُوفَ.

But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Sea of Suf [Reed Sea].”

٤١ 41 «فَأَجَبْتُمْ وَقُلْتُمْ لِي: قَدْ أَخْطَأْنَا إِلَى ٱلرَّبِّ. نَحْنُ نَصْعَدُ وَنُحَارِبُ حَسَبَ كُلِّ مَا أَمَرَنَا ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَهُنَا. وَتَنَطَّقْتُمْ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ بِعُدَّةِ حَرْبِهِ، وَٱسْتَخْفَفْتُمُ ٱلصُّعُوْدَ إِلَى ٱلْجَبَلِ.

Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against Adonai, we will go up and fight, according to all that Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] enjoined us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.

٤٢ 42 فَقَالَ ٱلرَّبُّ لِي: قُلْ لَهُمْ: لَا تَصْعَدُوا وَلَا تُحَارِبُوا، لِأَنِّي لَسْتُ فِي وَسَطِكُمْ لِئَلَّا تَنْكَسِرُوا أَمَامَ أَعْدَائِكُمْ.

Adonai said to me, “Tell them, ‘Don’t go up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be struck before your enemies.’”

٤٣ 43 فَكَلَّمْتُكُمْ وَلَمْ تَسْمَعُوا بَلْ عَصَيْتُمْ قَوْلَ ٱلرَّبِّ وَطَغَيْتُمْ، وَصَعِدْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلْجَبَلِ.

So I spoke to you, and you didn’t sh'ma ·hear obey·; but you rebelled against the order of Adonai, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.

٤٤ 44 فَخَرَجَ ٱلْأَمُورِيُّونَ ٱلسَّاكِنُونَ فِي ذَلِكَ ٱلْجَبَلِ لِلِقَائِكُمْ وَطَرَدُوكُمْ كَمَا يَفْعَلُ ٱلنَّحْلُ، وَكَسَرُوكُمْ فِي سِعِيرَ إِلَى حُرْمَةَ.

The Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], who lived in that hill country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.

٤٥ 45 فَرَجَعْتُمْ وَبَكَيْتُمْ أَمَامَ ٱلرَّبِّ، وَلَمْ يَسْمَعِ ٱلرَّبُّ لِصَوْتِكُمْ وَلَا أَصْغَى إِلَيْكُمْ.

You made teshuvah ·complete return· and wept before Adonai; but Adonai didn’t sh'ma ·hear obey· unto your voice, nor turn his ear to you.

٤٦ 46 وَقَعَدْتُمْ فِي قَادَشَ أَيَّامًا كَثِيرَةً كَٱلْأَيَّامِ ٱلَّتِي قَعَدْتُمْ فِيهَا.

So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.
