Acts 23
1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
ENTÓNCES Pablo, poniendo los ojos en el concilio, dice: Varones hermanos, yo con toda buena conciencia he conversado delante de Dios hasta el dia de hoy.
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
El príncipe de los sacerdotes, Ananías, mandó entónces á los que estaban delante de él que le hiriesen en la boca.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
Entónces Pablo le dijo: Herirte ha Dios, pared blanqueada: ¿y estás tú sentado para juzgarme conforme á la ley, y contra la ley me mandas herir?
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
Y los que estaban presentes dijeron: ¿Al sumo sacerdote de Dios maldices?
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
Y Pablo dijo: No sabia, hermanos, que era el sumo sacerdote; que escrito está: Al príncipe de tu pueblo no maldecirás.
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
Entónces Pablo, sabiendo que la una parte era de Saducéos, y la otra de Fariséos, clamó en el concilio: Varones hermanos, yo Fariséo soy, hijo de Fariséo: de la esperanza y de la resurreccion de los muertos soy yo juzgado.
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
Y como hubo dicho esto, fué hecha disension entre los Fariséos y los Saducéos; y la multitud fué dividida.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
(Porque los Saducéos dicen que no hay resurreccion, ni ángel, ni espíritu; mas los Fariséos confiesan ambas cosas.)
9 A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
Y levantóse un gran clamor: y levantándose los escribas de la parte de los Fariséos, contendian diciendo: Ningun mal hallamos en este hombre; que si espíritu le ha hablado, ó ángel, no resistamos á Dios.
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
Y habiendo grande disension, el tribuno teniendo temor que Pablo no fuese despedazado de ellos, mandó venir [la compañía de] soldados, y arrebatarle de en medio de ellos, y llevarle á la fortaleza.
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
Y la noche siguiente, presentándosele el Señor, le dijo: Confia, Pablo; que como has testificado de mí en Jerusalem, así es menester testifiques tambien en Roma.
12 When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
Y venido el dia, algunos de los Judíos se juntaron, y prometieron bajo de maldicion, diciendo que ni comerian ni beberian hasta que hubiesen muerto á Pablo.
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
Y eran más de cuarenta los que habian hecho esta conjuracion;
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
Los cuales se fueron á los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos, y dijeron: Nosotros hemos hecho voto debajo de maldicion, que no hemos de gustar nada hasta que hayamos muerto á Pablo.
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
Ahora pues vosotros con el concilio requerid al tribuno que le saque mañana á vosotros, como que quereis entender de él alguna cosa mas cierta, y nosotros, ántes que él llegue, estarémos aparejados para matarle.
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
Entónces un hijo de la hermana de Pablo, oyendo las asechanzas, fué y entró en la fortaleza, y dió aviso á Pablo.
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
Y Pablo llamando á uno de los centuriones, dice: Lleva á este mancebo al tribuno; porque tiene cierto aviso que darle.
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
El entónces tomándole, le llevó al tribuno, y dijo: El preso Pablo llamándome, me rogó que trajese á tí este mancebo, que tiene algo que hablarte.
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
Y el tribuno tomándole de la mano, y retirándose aparte, [le] preguntó: ¿Qué es lo que tienes que decirme?
20 He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
Y él dijo: Los Judíos han concertado rogarte que mañana saques á Pablo al concilio, como que han de inquirir de él alguna cosa más cierta.
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
Mas tú no los creas; porque más de cuarenta hombres de ellos le asechan, los cuales han hecho voto, debajo de maldicion, de no comer ni beber hasta que le hayan muerto; y ahora están apercibidos esperando tu promesa.
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
Entónces el tribuno despidió al mancebo, mandándo[le] que á nadie dijese que le habia dado aviso de esto.
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
Y llamados dos centuriones, [les] mandó que apercibiesen para la hora tercia de la noche doscientos soldados, que fuesen hasta Cesaréa, y setenta de á caballo, y doscientos lanceros;
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
Y que aparejasen cabalgaduras en que poniendo á Pablo, le llevasen en salvo á Felix el presidente.
25 He wrote a letter like this:
Y escribió una carta en estos términos:
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
Claudio Lisias al excelentísimo gobernador Felix, Salud.
27 “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
A este hombre, aprehendido de los Judíos, y que iban ellos á matar, libré yo acudiendo con la tropa, habiendo entendido que era Romano.
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
Y queriendo saber la causa por qué le acusaban, le llevé al concilio de ellos.
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
Y hallé que le acusaban de [algunas] cuestiones de la ley de ellos, y que ningun crimen tenia digno de muerte, ó de prision.
30 When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
Mas siéndome dado aviso de asechanzas que le habian aparejado los Judíos, luego al punto [le] he enviado á tí, é intimé tambien á los acusadores que traten delante de tí lo que [tienen] contra él. Pásalo bien.
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
Y los soldados, tomando á Pablo, como les era mandado, lleváronle de noche á Antipatris.
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
Y al dia siguiente dejando á los de á caballo que fuesen con él, se volvieron á la fortaleza.
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
Y como llegaron á Cesaréa, y dieron la carta al gobernador, presentaron tambien á Pablo delante de él.
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
Y el gobernador leida la carta, preguntó de qué provincia era; y entendiendo que de Cilicia,
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
Te oiré, dijo, cuando vinieren tambien tus acusadores. Y mandó que le guardasen en el Pretorio de Heródes.
