< Acts 23 >

1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
Phaawulos xiyyeeffatee yaaʼii sana ilaalee, “Yaa obboloota ko, ani hamma guyyaa harʼaatti fuula Waaqaa dura yaada gaariidhaan jiraadheera” jedhe.
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
Kana irratti Anaaniyaas lubni ol aanaan akka warri Phaawulos bira dhaabachaa turan sun afaan isaa keessa dhaʼan ajaje.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
Phaawulosis deebisee, “Ati keenyan nooraa dibame, Waaqni si rukuta! Seeraan natti muruuf jettee achi teessee atumti mataan kee immoo akka ani dhaʼamu ajajuudhaan seera cabsitaa?” jedhe.
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
Warri Phaawulos bira dhaabachaa turanis; “Ati akkam luba Waaqaa ol aanaa tokko arrabsita?” jedhaniin.
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
Phaawulos immoo deebisee, “Yaa obboloota, ani akka inni lubicha ol aanaa taʼe hin beekne; ‘Waaʼee bulchaa saba keetii hamaa hin dubbatin’ jedhamee barreeffameeraatii” jedhe.
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
Phaawulos yommuu akka isaan keessaa garri tokko Saduuqota, garri kaan immoo Fariisota taʼan beeketti, “Yaa obboloota ko, ani Fariisicha ilma Fariisii ti. Ani sababii akka warri duʼan duʼaa kaʼan abdadhuuf qoramuuf dhiʼaadheera” jedhe.
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
Yommuu inni waan kana dubbatetti Fariisotaa fi Saduuqota gidduutti falmiin uumame; yaaʼiin sun gargar qoodame.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
Saduuqonni, “Duʼaa kaʼuun hin jiru, ergamoonnis, hafuuronnis hin jiran” jedhu; Fariisonni garuu akka kunneen hundinuu jiran amanu.
9 A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
Wacni guddaanis uumame; barsiistonni seeraa tokko tokkos garee Fariisotaa keessaa kaʼanii, “Nu balleessaa tokko illee namicha kana irratti hin arganne; Hafuura yookaan ergamaa Waaqaatu isatti dubbate taʼinnaa?” jedhanii cimsanii dubbatan.
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
Ajajaan kumaa sunis yommuu falmiin jabaachaa deemetti jarri kun Phaawulosin cicciru jedhee sodaate. Kanaaf akka loltoonni dhaqanii humnaan achii isa fuudhanii qubata loltootaatti ol galchan ajaje.
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
Gooftaanis halkan itti aanutti Phaawulositti mulʼatee, “Jabaadhu! Akkuma Yerusaalem keessatti waaʼee koo dhugaa baate sana Roomaa keessattis dhugaa baʼuu qabdaatii” jedheen.
12 When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
Yihuudoonni tokko tokko barii guyyaa itti aanuu mariʼatanii akka hamma Phaawulosin ajjeesanitti waa hin nyaanne yookaan waa hin dhugne walii kakatan.
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
Namoota afurtamaa oltu maree kana irratti hirmaate.
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
Isaanis gara luboota hangafootaatii fi gara maanguddootaa dhaqanii akkana jedhan; “Nu hamma Phaawulosin ajjeefnutti akka homaa afaaniin hin qabne jabeessinee kakanneerra.
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
Kanaafuu isinii fi waldaan Yihuudootaa waan waaʼee Phaawulos sirriitti cimsitanii qorachuu barbaaddan fakkeessaatii akka ajajaan kumaa sun Phaawulosin gara keessanitti gad ergu kadhadhaa; nu utuu inni achi hin gaʼin isa ajjeesuuf qophoofneerraatii.”
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
Garuu ilmi obboleettii Phaawulos yommuu maree kana dhagaʼetti qubata loltootaatti ol galee Phaawulositti hime.
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
Phaawulosis ajajjuuwwan dhibbaa keessaa nama tokko waamee, “Dargaggeessi kun waan isatti himu qabaatii mee ajajaa kumaatti isa geessi” jedheen.
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Innis ajajaa kumaa sanatti isa geesse. Ajajaan dhibbaa sunis, “Phaawulos inni mana hidhaa jiru sun na waamsisee waan dargaggeessi kun waan sitti himu qabuuf akka ani isa sitti fidu na kadhate” jedheen.
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
Ajajaan kumaas dargaggeessa sana harka qabee kophaatti baasee, “Wanni ati natti himuu barbaaddu maali?” jedhee gaafate.
20 He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
Dargaggeessi sunis akkana jedhe; “Yihuudoonni waan waaʼee isaa sirriitti cimsanii qoruu barbaadan fakkeessanii akka ati Phaawulosin bori gara yaaʼii Yihuudootaatti gad ergitu si kadhachuuf walii galaniiru.
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
Waan isaan keessaa namoonni afurtamaa oli taʼan riphanii isa eeggachaa jiraniif ati isaan jalaa hin qabin. Isaan akka hamma isa ajjeesanitti homaa hin nyaanne yookaan hin dhugne kakataniiru; qophaaʼaniis eeyyama kee eeggachaa jiru.”
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
Ajajaan kumaa sunis, “Ati akka waan kana natti himte nama tokkotti iyyuu hin dubbatin” jedhee dargaggeessa sana akeekkachiisee gad dhiise.
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
Ergasii inni ajajjuuwwan dhibbaa keessaa nama lama waamee akkana jedhee ajaje; “Akka loltoonni dhibbi lama, abbootiin fardaa torbaatamnii fi warri eeboo qabatan dhibbi lama edana saʼaatii sadiitti Qiisaariyaa dhaqaniif qopheessaa.
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
Phaawulosiifis farda inni yaabbatu qopheessaatii gara Feeliksi Bulchaa Biyyaatti nagaan geessaa.”
25 He wrote a letter like this:
Innis akkana jedhee xalayaa tokko barreesse.
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
Qilaawudewoos Liisiiyaas irraa, Gara bulchaa kabajamaa, gara Feeliksi: Nagaa jirtaa.
27 “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
Yihuudoonni namicha kana qabanii ajjeesuu barbaadaa turan; ani garuu akka inni lammii Roomaa taʼe beekee loltoota koo wajjin dhaqee isa baase.
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
Anis waan isaan isa himataniif beekuu barbaadeen fuula waldaa isaanii duratti isa dhiʼeesse.
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
Ani akka inni waaʼee gaaffii seera isaaniitiin himatame arge malee akka inni waan duʼaan yookaan hidhaan isa gaʼu tokkumaanuu himatame hin argine.
30 When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
Ani yeroo akka isaan namicha sanatti mariʼatan dhagaʼetti dafee isa sitti erge. Warra isa himatanis akka isaan himata isaanii sittan dhiʼeeffatan ajajeera.
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
Kanaaf loltoonni sun akkuma ajajaman sana Phaawulosin fuudhanii halkaniin Antiiphaaxriisitti geessan.
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
Isaanis guyyaa itti aanutti akka abbootiin fardaa isa wajjin deeman godhanii ofii immoo qubata loltootaatti deebiʼan.
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
Abbootiin fardaa sunis yommuu Qiisaariyaa gaʼanitti xalayaa sana bulchaatti kennan; Phaawulosinis fuula isaa dura dhiʼeessan.
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
Bulchaan sunis erga xalayaa sana dubbifatee booddee, akka inni biyya kamii dhufe isa gaafate. Yommuu akka inni Kiilqiyaadhaa dhufe beekettis,
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
“Ani yeroo himattoonni kee as gaʼanitti dubbii kee nan dhagaʼa” jedhe. Innis ergasii akka Phaawulos masaraa Heroodis keessatti eegamus ajaje.
