Acts 23
1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
Da så Paulus fast på rådet og sa: Brødre! med all god samvittighet har jeg ført mitt levnet for Gud inntil denne dag.
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
Ypperstepresten Ananias bød da dem som stod der, å slå ham på munnen.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
Da sa Paulus til ham: Gud skal slå dig, du kalkede vegg! Og du sitter her for å dømme mig efter loven, og du bryter loven ved å byde at de skal slå mig?
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
De som stod der, sa da: Skjeller du ut Guds yppersteprest?
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
Og Paulus sa: Jeg visste ikke, brødre, at det var ypperstepresten; det står jo skrevet: Mot en høvding blandt ditt folk skal du ikke bruke ukvemsord.
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
Da nu Paulus visste at den ene del av dem var sadduseere og den andre del fariseere, ropte han i rådet: Brødre! jeg er en fariseer, sønn av fariseere; det er for håp og for de dødes opstandelse at jeg står her for retten.
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
Da han sa dette, blev det strid mellem fariseerne og sadduseerne, og hopen blev innbyrdes uenig.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
For sadduseerne sier at det ikke er nogen opstandelse, heller ikke nogen engel eller ånd; men fariseerne lærer begge deler.
9 A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
Nu blev det da et stort skrik, og nogen skriftlærde av fariseernes flokk stod op og stred skarpt og sa: Vi finner intet ondt hos dette menneske; om det nu var en ånd som talte til ham, eller en engel?
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
Da det nu opstod stor strid, fryktet den øverste høvedsmann for at Paulus skulde bli slitt i stykker av dem, og han bød krigsfolket å gå ned og rive ham ut fra dem og føre ham inn i festningen.
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
Men natten efter stod Herren for ham og sa: Vær frimodig! likesom du vidnet om mig i Jerusalem, således skal du også vidne i Rom.
12 When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
Men da det var blitt dag, la jødene sig sammen mot ham, og forbannet sig på at de hverken vilde ete eller drikke før de hadde drept Paulus.
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
Det var mere enn firti som således sammensvor sig,
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
og de gikk til yppersteprestene og de eldste og sa: Vi har forbannet oss på at vi ikke vil smake mat før vi har drept Paulus;
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
nu må da I sammen med rådet la den øverste høvedsmann vite at han skal føre ham ned til eder, som om I nøiere vilde prøve hans sak; så holder vi oss ferdige til å drepe ham før han når frem.
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
Men Paulus' søstersønn fikk høre om dette hemmelige råd, og han kom og gikk inn i festningen og fortalte Paulus det.
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
Paulus kalte da en av høvedsmennene til sig og sa: Før denne unge mann til den øverste høvedsmann! for han har noget å melde ham.
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Han tok ham da med sig og førte ham til den øverste høvedsmann og sier: Fangen Paulus kalte mig til sig og bad mig føre denne unge mann til dig, da han hadde noget å si dig.
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
Den øverste høvedsmann tok ham da ved hånden og gikk til side og spurte: Hvad er det du har å melde mig?
20 He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
Han sa da: Jødene er kommet overens om å be dig at du imorgen vil føre Paulus for rådet, som om det vilde få nøiere rede på hans sak;
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
du må da ikke la dig overtale av dem; for mere enn firti menn av dem ligger på lur efter ham, og de har forbannet sig på at de hverken vil ete eller drikke før de har drept ham, og nu holder de sig ferdige og venter på at du skal love det.
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
Den øverste høvedsmann lot da den unge mann gå og bød ham: Du må ikke si til nogen at du har latt mig få vite dette.
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
Og han kalte til sig to av høvedsmennene og sa: La to hundre stridsmenn holde sig ferdige til å dra til Cesarea, og sytti hestfolk og to hundre skyttere, fra den tredje time på natten!
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
Og han bød at de skulde gjøre hester i stand, forat de kunde la Paulus ride på dem og føre ham sikkert frem til landshøvdingen Feliks.
25 He wrote a letter like this:
Og han skrev et brev med dette innhold:
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
Klaudius Lysias hilser den mektige landshøvding Feliks.
27 “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
Denne mann, som var grepet av jødene og nær ved å bli drept av dem, ham fridde jeg ut; jeg kom til med krigsfolket, efterat jeg hadde fått vite at han var romersk borger;
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
og da jeg vilde vite hvad det var de hadde å klage på ham, førte jeg ham ned for deres råd.
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
Jeg fant da at de førte klage over ham for nogen spørsmål i deres lov, men at det ikke var noget klagemål imot ham som gjorde ham skyldig til død eller fengsel.
30 When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
Men da det nu er blitt meldt mig at de vil gjøre et overfall på mannen, sender jeg ham uten ophold til dig, efterat jeg har pålagt hans anklagere at også de skal fremføre for dig det de har å si.
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
Krigsfolket tok nu Paulus, som det var blitt dem pålagt, og førte ham om natten til Antipatris,
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
og dagen efter lot de hestfolket dra videre med ham og vendte selv tilbake til festningen.
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
De kom da til Cesarea og lot landshøvdingen få brevet, og førte også Paulus frem for ham.
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
Da han hadde lest det og spurt hvad land han var fra, og fått vite at han var fra Kilikia, sa han:
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
Jeg skal ta dig i forhør når dine anklagere kommer. Og han bød at han skulde holdes i varetekt i Herodes' borg.
