Acts 23
1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
Mit festem Blick schaute Paulus auf den Rat und sprach: Männer, Brüder, ich habe mit allem guten Gewissen bis auf diesen Tag vor Gott gewandelt.
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
Der Hohepriester Ananias aber hieß, die neben ihm standen, ihn auf den Mund schlagen.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
Da sprach Paulus zu ihm: Gott wird dich schlagen, du übertünchte Wand! Und du sitzest, mich zu richten nach dem Gesetz und heißt mich schlagen wider das Gesetz!
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
Die Umstehenden aber sprachen: Schiltst du den Hohenpriester Gottes?
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
Da sprach Paulus: Ich wußte nicht, Brüder, daß es der Hohepriester ist; es steht ja geschrieben: den Führer deines Volkes sollst du nicht schmähen.
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
Da aber Paulus wußte, daß ein Teil Sadduzäer war, der andere Pharisäer, rief er in dem Rat: Männer, Brüder, ich bin ein Pharisäer und eines Pharisäers Sohn, wegen der Hoffnung der Auferstehung der Toten werde ich gerichtet.
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
Wie er das sagte, entstand ein Zwiespalt unter den Pharisäern und Sadduzäern, und die Versammlung teilte sich.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
Denn die Sadduzäer sagen, es gebe keine Auferstehung, keinen Engel, keinen Geist, die Pharisäer aber bekennen beides.
9 A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
Da entstand nun ein großer Lärm, und die Schriftgelehrten von der Partei der Pharisäer standen auf, stritten und sagten: Wir finden nichts Arges an diesem Menschen; wenn aber ein Geist oder ein Engel zu ihm sprach, so können wir mit Gott nicht streiten.
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
Da aber der Lärm zu groß ward, besorgte der Oberste, Paulus möchte von ihnen zerrissen werden, und befahl der Mannschaft, ihn aus ihrer Mitte wegzunehmen und in das Lager zu führen.
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
In der folgenden Nacht aber erschien ihm der Herr und sprach: Sei getrost, Paulus! Denn wie du für Mich in Jerusalem gezeugt hast, so sollst du auch in Rom zeugen.
12 When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
Wie es aber Tag ward, verschworen sich etliche Juden und verbannten sich, weder zu essen, noch zu trinken, bis daß sie Paulus umgebracht hätten.
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
Es waren ihrer mehr denn vierzig, die sich so verschworen
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
Diese traten vor die Hohenpriester und die Ältesten und sprachen: Wir haben uns verflucht und verschworen, nichts zu kosten, bis wir Paulus getötet haben.
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
So tut nun kund dem Obersten samt dem Rat, daß er ihn morgen zu euch herabführen sollte, weil ihr seinen Fall genauer untersuchen wollet; wir aber sind bereit, ihm, ehe er herzutritt, niederzustoßen.
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
Als aber der Sohn der Schwester des Paulus von dem Anschlag hörte, kam er, ging hinein in das Lager und sagte es Paulus an.
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
Paulus ließ einen der Hauptleute zu sich rufen und sagte: Führe den jungen Menschen da zu dem Obersten; denn er hat ihm eine Anzeige zu machen.
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Der nahm ihn nun, führte ihn zum Obersten und sagte: Der gefangene Paulus ließ mich zu sich rufen, und bat mich, den jungen Menschen da zu dir zu führen, er habe dir etwas zu sagen.
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
Da nahm ihn der Oberste bei der Hand, trat mit ihm beiseite und fragte ihn: Was ist es, das du mir zu berichten hast?
20 He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
Er aber sagte: Die Juden sind eins geworden, dich zu bitten, Paulus morgen in den Rat herabzuführen, als hätten sie vor, seine Angelegenheit genauer zu untersuchen.
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
Du aber traue ihnen nicht; denn mehr denn vierzig Männer unter ihnen halten auf ihn, und haben sich verbannt, weder zu essen noch zu trinken, bis daß sie ihn umgebracht hätten, und sind schon bereit und warten auf Nachricht von dir.
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
Der Oberste entließ nun den Jungen und verbot ihm, weiter zu sagen, daß er ihm diese Anzeige machte.
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
Er ließ nun zwei der Hauptleute rufen und sagte: Haltet zweihundert Kriegsknechte bereit, daß sie nach Cäsarea ziehen, und mit ihnen siebzig Reiter und zweihundert Schleuderer, auf die dritte Stunde der Nacht.
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
Auch sollten sie Tiere bereithalten, um Paulus daraufzusetzen und ihn wohlbewahrt zum Landpfleger Felix zu bringen.
25 He wrote a letter like this:
Auch schrieb er einen Brief, der also lautete:
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
Claudius Lysias entbietet dem edlen Landpfleger Felix seinen Gruß.
27 “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
Diesen Mann, der vor den Juden ergriffen und beinahe umgebracht worden wäre, habe ich mit der Mannschaft herausgerissen, da ich erfuhr, daß er ein Römer ist.
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
Da ich die Ursache erfahren wollte, warum sie ihn anklagten, ließ ich ihn vor ihren Rat bringen,
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
Und befand, daß er wegen Fragen ihres Gesetzes angeschuldigt ward, aber keines Verbrechens, das des Todes oder der Bande wert ist, schuldig war.
30 When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
Da mir aber angezeigt wurde, daß von den Juden ein Anschlag gegen ihn gemacht worden, schicke ich ihn alsbald an dich, und beschied seine Ankläger, dir vorzutragen, was sie wider ihn hätten. Gehab dich wohl!
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
Die Kriegsleute nahmen nun, wie ihnen befohlen war, Paulus, und führten ihn in der Nacht nach Antipatris.
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
Des anderen Tages ließen sie die Reiter mit ihm weiterziehen und wandten wieder um nach dem Lager.
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
Da sie nach Cäsarea kamen, übergaben sie dem Landpfleger das Schreiben und überantworteten ihm Paulus.
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
Als der Landpfleger den Brief las, fragte er, aus welcher Provinz er wäre, und erfuhr, daß er aus Cilicien sei.
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
Da sprach er: Ich will dich verhören, wenn deine Ankläger angekommen sind; und ließ ihn im Palaste des Herodes verwahren.
