Acts 23
1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
Paul, regardant en face le Sanhédrin, dit: «Frères, «C'est en toute bonne conscience que je me suis conduit devant Dieu jusqu'à aujourd'hui...»
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
Le grand-prêtre Hananias ordonna alors aux assistants de souffleter Paul sur la bouche.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
«Dieu te frappera à ton tour, muraille blanchie!» répondit Paul en se tournant vers lui, «tu sièges pour me juger selon la Loi, et c'est au mépris de la Loi que tu ordonnes de me frapper!»
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
— «Quoi! tu injuries le grand-prêtre de Dieu!» dirent les assistants.
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
Mais Paul: «Je ne savais pas, frères, que ce fût le grand-prêtre, car il est écrit: «Tu n'insulteras pas le chef de ton peuple.»
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
Paul, sachant que l'assemblée était composée en partie de Sadducéens, en partie de Pharisiens, s'écria en plein Sanhédrin: «Frères, je suis Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens, c'est pour mon espérance, c'est pour la résurrection des morts qu'on me met en jugement!»
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
Ces paroles provoquèrent une scission entre les Pharisiens et les Sadducéens et l'assemblée se divisa.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
En effet, les Sadducéens nient la résurrection, l'existence des anges et des Esprits; les Pharisiens admettent tout cela.
9 A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
Il s'ensuivit une discussion tumultueuse; certains Scribes du parti pharisien se levèrent, prirent la défense de Paul et dirent: «Nous ne trouvons rien à reprocher à cet homme... Si un Esprit lui a parlé! un ange, peut-être!»...
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
La dispute s'envenimait, et le tribun craignait que Paul ne fût mis en pièces; il donna ordre à une escouade de soldats de descendre dans la salle, d'arracher Paul de leurs mains et de le reconduire à la Forteresse.
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
La nuit suivante, le Seigneur lui apparut et lui dit: «Courage! comme tu as été mon témoin à Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu sois mon témoin à Rome!»
12 When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
Le lendemain matin, les Juifs formèrent entre eux un complot et s'obligèrent par voeu à ne manger ni boire tant qu'ils n'auraient pas tué Paul.
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
Ils étaient plus de quarante à avoir fait cette conjuration.
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
Ils allèrent trouver les chefs des prêtres et les Anciens et leur dirent: «Nous nous sommes obligés par voeu, sous les plus terribles anathèmes, à ne rien manger que nous n'ayons tué Paul.
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
Intervenez donc, avec le Sanhédrin, auprès du tribun pour obtenir une nouvelle comparution, comme si vous vouliez étudier plus à fond son affaire. Quant à nous, nous sommes prêts; nous le tuerons dans le trajet.»
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
Mais le fils de la soeur de Paul entendit parler de ce guet-apens, se rendit à la Forteresse, y entra et révéla tout à Paul.
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
Celui-ci fit alors appeler un des centurions: «Mène ce jeune homme au tribun, lui dit-il, il a quelque chose à lui communiquer.
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Le centurion l'emmena donc chez le tribun et lui dit: «Le prisonnier Paul m'a fait appeler et m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire.»
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
Le tribun prit le jeune homme par la main, le conduisit à l'écart et lui demanda: «Qu'as-tu à me communiquer?»
20 He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
— «Les Juifs, répondit-il, sont convenus de te prier de faire comparaître Paul demain devant le Sanhédrin, comme s'ils voulaient étudier plus à fond son affaire.
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
Garde-toi de le faire; c'est un guet-apens; ils sont plus de quarante qui se sont obligés par voeu à ne manger ni boire avant de l'avoir tué. Ils sont tout prêts; ils n'attendent que ton consentement.»
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
Le tribun renvoya le jeune homme en lui défendant de parler à personne de ce qu'il venait de lui apprendre.
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
Puis il fit appeler deux centurions: «Tenez prêts, leur dit-il, à partir de la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats, soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents hommes du train pour aller jusqu'à Césarée.»
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
Il commanda aussi de se pourvoir de montures pour Paul, afin de le mener sain et sauf au procurateur Félix.
25 He wrote a letter like this:
En même temps il écrivit à celui-ci une lettre, dont voici la teneur:
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
«Claudius Lysias à son excellence le procurateur Félix. Salut.
27 “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
«Cet homme a été arrêté par les Juifs, et ils allaient le tuer, quand j'arrivai avec la troupe et le leur enlevai; j'avais appris qu'il était citoyen romain.
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
Voulant connaître le motif de leurs accusations, je le conduisis au Sanhédrin;
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
voici ce que je trouvai: des poursuites sur des questions relatives à leur Loi et aucun grief qui méritât la mort ou la prison.
30 When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
Mais on m'a dénoncé un complot contre cet homme; je te l'ai donc envoyé sans retard et j'ai prévenu les accusateurs qu'ils eussent aussi à prendre la parole contre lui devant toi.»
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
Les soldats exécutèrent ces ordres; ils prirent Paul et le conduisirent de nuit jusqu'à Antipatris.
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers continuer le chemin avec lui et rentrèrent à la Forteresse.
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
Ceux-là, arrivés à Césarée, remirent la lettre au procurateur et lui présentèrent Paul.
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
Il la lut et s'informa de quel pays il était. Apprenant qu'il était de Cilicie:
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
«Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront arrivés.» Puis il ordonna de le garder dans le prétoire d'Hérode.
