Acts 23
1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
Paul, les regards fixés sur le sanhédrin, dit: «Frères, c'est en toute bonne conscience que je me suis conduit devant Dieu jusqu’à ce jour...»
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
Le souverain sacrificateur Ananias ordonna aux huissiers qui étaient près de lui, de le frapper à la bouche.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
Alors Paul lui dit: «Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie! Tu sièges pour me juger selon la loi, et, au mépris de la loi, tu ordonnes qu'on me frappe!»
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
Mais les huissiers lui dirent: «Tu insultes le souverain sacrificateur de Dieu!»
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
Paul dit: «Je ne savais pas, mes frères, qu'il était souverain sacrificateur, car il est écrit: «Tu ne proféreras point d'injures contre un chef de ton peuple.»
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
Paul, sachant qu'une partie du sénat se composait de sadducéens, et l'autre, de pharisiens, s'écria en plein sanhédrin: «Mes frères, je suis pharisien, fils de pharisiens, c'est à cause de l'espérance et de la résurrection des morts que je suis mis en jugement.»
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
Dès qu'il eut prononcé ces paroles, un dissentiment éclata entre les pharisiens et les sadducéens, et l'assemblée se divisa;
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
car les sadducéens prétendent qu'il n'y a pas de résurrection, ni même d'ange et d'esprit, tandis que les pharisiens professent l'une et l'autre doctrine.
9 A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
Une grande clameur se fit entendre; des scribes du parti des pharisiens s'étant levés, dirent dans l'ardeur de la lutte: «Nous ne trouvons aucun mal en cet homme; si un esprit lui a parlé, ou un ange, qu'est-ce à dire?»
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
Comme la discorde éclatait, le tribun, craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par eux, donna l'ordre de faire venir la troupe pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux, et le ramener dans la caserne.
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
La nuit suivante, le Seigneur se présenta à Paul, et lui dit: «Prends courage; comme tu m'as rendu témoignage à Jérusalem, il faut de même que tu me rendes témoignage à Rome.»
12 When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
Quand le jour fut venu, les Juifs ourdirent un complot, et jurèrent, avec des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, de ne manger ni boire qu'ils n'eussent tué Paul.
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
Ils étaient plus de quarante qui avaient fait cette conjuration.
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
Ils allèrent trouver les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens, et leur dirent: «Nous avons juré, avec des imprécations contre nous-mêmes, de ne rien manger que nous n'ayons tué Paul.
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
Vous donc, maintenant, adressez-vous avec le sanhédrin au tribun, pour qu'il vous l'amène, comme si vous vouliez examiner plus soigneusement son affaire; et nous, nous sommes prêts à le tuer, avant qu'il approche.»
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
Le fils de la soeur de Paul, ayant entendu parler de ce guet-apens, se rendit à la caserne, y entra, et en informa Paul.
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
Celui-ci appela un des centurions, et lui dit: «Mène ce jeune homme au tribun, car il a quelque chose à lui communiquer.»
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Le centurion prit donc le jeune homme avec lui, le mena auprès du tribun, et lui dit: «Le prisonnier Paul m'ayant appelé, m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme, parce qu'il a quelque chose à te dire.»
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
Le tribun ayant pris le jeune homme par la main et l'ayant tiré à part, lui demanda: «Qu'as-tu à me communiquer?»
20 He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
— «Les Juifs, dit-il, sont convenus de te prier d'amener demain Paul au sanhédrin, sous prétexte de te le faire examiner plus soigneusement.
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
Garde-toi d'y consentir, car c'est un guet-apens: plus de quarante d'entre eux ont juré, avec des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, de ne manger ni boire qu'ils ne l'aient tué; maintenant ils sont prêts, et n'attendent que ton consentement.»
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
Le tribun renvoya le jeune homme en lui recommandant de ne dire à personne qu'il lui eût fait ce rapport;
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
et, ayant appelé deux de ses centurions, il leur dit: «Tenez prêts, dès la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats avec soixante et cavaliers et deux cents lanciers pour aller jusqu’à Césarée.»
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
Il leur dit aussi de se pourvoir de montures pour Paul, afin de le mener sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix;
25 He wrote a letter like this:
il écrivit en même temps une lettre, dont voici la teneur:
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
« Claude Lysias au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut!
27 “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
— Les Juifs s'étaient saisis de cet homme et allaient le tuer, quand j'arrivai avec de la troupe et le leur arrachai, ayant appris qu'il était citoyen romain.
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
Comme je désirais savoir de quel crime ils l'accusaient, je le menai dans leur sénat,
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
et je trouvai qu'il s'agissait de controverses relatives à leur Loi, mais qu'il n'y avait point de grief qui méritât la mort ou la prison.
30 When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
Ayant reçu l'avis qu'on devait lui dresser des embûches, je te l'ai immédiatement envoyé, et j'ai ordonné à ses accusateurs de porter leur plainte devant toi.»
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
Conformément à l'ordre qu'ils avaient reçu, les soldats prirent Paul et le conduisirent pendant la nuit à Antipatris.
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers cheminer avec Paul, et revinrent à la caserne.
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
Les cavaliers entrèrent à Césarée et remirent la lettre au gouverneur; ils lui présentèrent aussi Paul.
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
Après avoir lu la lettre, le gouverneur demanda de quelle province était Paul, et, ayant appris qu'il était de Cilicie, il lui dit:
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
«Je t'entendrai quand tes accusateurs seront venus; » et il commanda qu'on le gardât dans le prétoire d'Hérode.
