Acts 23
1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
১আর পৌল মহাসভার দিকে এক নজরে তাকিয়ে বললেন, হে ভাইয়েরা, আজ পর্যন্ত আমি সব বিষয়ে বিবেকের সঙ্গে ঈশ্বরের প্রজার মতো আচরণ করে আসছি।
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
২তখন মহাযাজক অননিয়, যারা কাছে দাঁড়িয়েছিল, তাদেরকে আদেশ দিলেন, যেন তাঁর মুখে আঘাত করে।
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
৩তখন পৌল তাঁকে বললেন, “হে চুনকাম করা দেওয়াল, ঈশ্বর তোমাকে আঘাত করবেন; তুমি ব্যবস্থা দিয়ে আমার বিচার করতে বসেছ, আর ব্যবস্থায় বিপরীতে আমাকে আঘাত করতে আদেশ দিচ্ছ?”
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
৪তাতে যারা কাছে দাঁড়িয়েছিল তারা বলল, “তুমি কি ঈশ্বরের মহাযাজককে এমনিভাবে অপমান করছ?”
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
৫পৌল বললেন, “হে ভাইয়েরা, আমি জানতাম না যে, উনি মহাযাজক;” কারণ লেখা আছে, “তুমি নিজ জাতির লোকদের তত্ত্বাবধায়ককে খারাপ কথা বল না।”
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
৬কিন্তু পৌল যখন বুঝতে পারলেন যে, তাদের একভাগ সদ্দূকী ও একভাগ ফরীশী, তখন মহাসভার মধ্যে খুব জোরে চিৎকার করে বললেন, “হে ভাইয়েরা, আমি ফরীশী এবং ফরীশীদের সন্তান; মৃতদের আশাও পুনরুত্থান সম্বন্ধে আমার বিচার হচ্ছে।”
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
৭তিনি এই কথা বলতে না বলতে ফরীশী ও সদ্দূকীদের মধ্যে বিরোধ সৃষ্টি হলো; সভার মধ্যে দুটি দল হয়ে গেল।
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
৮কারণ সদ্দূকীরা বলে, পুনরুত্থান নেই, স্বর্গদূত বা মন্দ আত্মা নেই; কিন্তু ফরীশীরা উভয়ই স্বীকার করে।
9 A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
৯তখন খুব চেঁচামেচি হলো এবং ফরীশী পক্ষের মধ্যে কয়েক জন ব্যবস্থার শিক্ষক উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে ঝগড়া করে বলতে লাগল, আমরা এই লোকটী মধ্যে কোনো ভুল দেখতে পাচ্ছি না; কোনো মন্দ আত্মা কিংবা কোনো দূত যদি এনার সাথে কথা বলে থাকেন, তাতে কি?
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
১০এই ভাবে খুব গন্ডগোল হলে, যদি তারা পৌলকে মেরে ফেলে, এই ভয়ে সেনাপতি আদেশ দিলেন, সৈন্যদল গিয়ে তাদের মধ্যে থেকে পৌলকে দুর্গে নিয়ে যাক।
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
১১পরে রাত্রিতে প্রভু পৌলের কাছে দাঁড়িয়ে বললেন, সাহস কর, কারণ আমার বিষয়ে যেমন যিরুশালেমে সাক্ষ্য দিয়েছ, তেমনি রোমেও দিতে হবে।
12 When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
১২দিন হলে পর ইহুদীরা ষড়যন্ত্র করলো এবং নিজেদেরকে অভিশপ্ত করলো, তারা বলল আমরা যে পর্যন্ত পৌলকে হত্যা না করি, সে পর্যন্ত খাবার ও জল পান করব না।
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
১৩চল্লিশ জনের বেশি লোক একসঙ্গে শপথ করে এই পরিকল্পনা করল।
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
১৪তারা প্রধান যাজকদের ও প্রাচীনবর্গের কাছে গিয়ে বলল, আমরা এক কঠিন শপথ করেছি, যে পর্যন্ত পৌলকে হত্যা না করব, সে পর্যন্ত কিছুই গ্রহণ করব না।
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
১৫অতএব আপনারা এখন মহাসভার সাথে সহস্রপতির কাছে আবেদন করুন, যেন তিনি আপনাদের কাছে তাকে নামিয়ে আনেন, বলুন যে, আপনারা আরও সূক্ষরূপে তার বিষয়ে বিচার করতে প্রস্তুত হয়েছেন; আর সে কাছে আসার আগেই আমরা তাকে হত্যা করতে প্রস্তুত থাকলাম।
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
১৬কিন্তু পৌলের বোনের ছেলে তাদের এই ঘাঁটি বসানোর কথা শুনতে পেয়ে দুর্গের মধ্যে চলে গিয়ে পৌলকে জানালো।
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
১৭তাতে পৌল একজন শতপতিকে কাছে ডেকে বললেন, সহস্রপতির কাছে এই যুবককে নিয়ে যান; কারণ তাঁর কাছে এর কিছু বলার আছে।
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
১৮তাতে তিনি সঙ্গে নিয়ে সহস্রপতির কাছে গিয়ে বললেন, বন্দি পৌল আমাকে কাছে ডেকে আপনার কাছে এই যুবককে আনতে বলল, কারণ আপনার কাছে এর কিছু বলার আছে।
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
১৯তখন সহস্রপতি তার হাত ধরে এক পাশে নিয়ে গিয়ে গোপনে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, আমার কাছে তোমার কি বলার আছে?
20 He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
২০সে বলল, ইহুদীরা আপনার কাছে এই অনুরোধ করার পরামর্শ করেছে, যেন আপনি কাল আরও সূক্ষরূপে পৌলের বিষয়ে জানার জন্য তাঁকে মহাসভায় নিয়ে যান।
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
২১অতএব আপনি তাদের কথা গ্রাহ্য করবেন না, কারণ তাদের মধ্যে চল্লিশ জনের বেশি লোক তাঁর জন্য ঘাঁটি বসিয়েছে; তারা এক কঠিন প্রতিজ্ঞা করেছে; যে পর্যন্ত তাঁকে হত্যা না করবে, সে পর্যন্ত ভোজন কি পান করবে না, আর এখনই প্রস্তুত আছে, আপনার অনুমতির অপেক্ষা করছে।
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
২২তখন সহস্রপতি ঐ যুবককে নির্দেশ দিয়ে বিদায় করলেন, তুমি যে এই সব আমাকে বলেছ তা কাউকেও বল না।
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
২৩পরে তিনি দুই জন শতপতিকে কাছে ডেকে বললেন, কৈসরিয়া পর্যন্ত যাবার জন্য রাত্রি ন-টার দিনের দুশো সেনা ও সত্তর জন অশ্বারোহী এবং দুশো বর্শাধারী লোক প্রস্তুত রাখো।
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
২৪তিনি ঘোড়া প্রস্তুত রাখতে আদেশ দিলেন, যেন তারা পৌলকে তার উপরে বসিয়ে নিরাপদে রাজ্যপাল ফেলিক্সের কাছে পৌছিয়ে দেয়।
25 He wrote a letter like this:
২৫পরে তিনি এরূপ একটি চিঠি লিখলেন,
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
২৬মহামহিম রাজ্যপাল ফীলিক্স সমীপেষু, ক্লোদিয় লুষিয়ের অভিবাদন।
27 “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
২৭ইহুদীরা এই লোকটিকে ধরে হত্যা করতে উদ্যত হলে আমি সৈন্যসহ উপস্থিত হয়ে তাঁকে উদ্ধার করলাম, কারণ জানতে পেলাম যে, এই লোকটি রোমীয়।
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
২৮পরে তারা কি কারণে এই লোকটী ওপরে দোষ দিচ্ছে তা জানবার জন্যে তাদের মহাসভায় এই লোকটিকে নিয়ে গেলাম।
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
২৯তাতে আমি বুঝলাম, তাদের ব্যবস্থা সম্বন্ধে এর উপরে দোষ দেওয়া হয়েছে, কিন্তু মৃত্যুদন্ড বা জেলখানায় দেওয়ার মত অভিযোগ এর নামে হয়নি।
30 When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
৩০আর এই লোকটী বিরুদ্ধে চক্রান্ত হবে, এই সংবাদ পেয়ে আমি তাড়াতাড়িই আপনার কাছে পাঠিয়ে দিলাম। এর উপর যারা দোষ দিয়েছে, তাদেরও নির্দেশ দিলাম, তারা আপনার কাছে এর বিরুদ্ধে যা বলবার থাকে, বলুক।
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
৩১পরে সেনারা আদেশ অনুসারে পৌলকে নিয়ে রাত্রিবেলায় আন্তিপাত্রিতে গেল।
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
৩২পরদিন অশ্বারোহীদের তাঁদের সঙ্গে যাবার জন্য রেখে তারা দুর্গে ফিরে আসলো।
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
৩৩ওরা কৈসরিয়াতে পৌঁছিয়ে রাজ্যপালের হাতে চিঠিটি দিয়ে পৌলকেও তাঁর কাছে উপস্থিত করল।
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
৩৪তিনি চিঠিটি পড়ে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, এ কোন প্রদেশের লোক? তখন তিনি জানতে পারলেন সে কিলিকিয়া প্রদেশের লোক।
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
৩৫এই জানতে পেয়ে রাজ্যপাল বললেন, যারা তোমার উপরে দোষ দিয়েছে, তারা যখন আসবে তখন তোমার কথা শুনব। পরে তিনি হেরোদের রাজবাটিতে তাঁকে রাখতে আজ্ঞা দিলেন।
